Things we love: Mom's Best Naturals
It’s hard to get me excited about cereal... When three family-size boxes of Mom’s Best Naturals cereals and oatmeals arrived on my desk last week, I was not thrilled. The cereal, however, became more interesting as I read the boxes: “no hydrogenated or palm oil,” “no high fructose corn syrup,” “whole grain,” “made with renewable energy.”
They pretty much had me at the high fructose corn syrup.

Mom's Best cereal is a real natural

Mom's Best Naturals Cereal. Sweetened Wheat-fuls, Toasty O's, Honey Nut Toasty O's, Raisin Bran, Toasted Wheat-fuls, and Mallow-Oats. $2.49 to $3.49 per 16-ounce to 24-ounce box.

Bonnie: Mom's Best Naturals Cereal includes six varieties in large family-size boxes that are comparably priced or less expensive than their mainstream competitors. But these cereals contain no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives, no hydrogenated oil, and no high-fructose corn syrup. I like all of that. What I don't like is that in terms of nutrients, these contain much fewer vitamins and minerals (albeit added ones) than General Mills, Kellogg's or Post cereals. If your family generally eats a well-balanced diet, then do take advantage of these cereals savings. Otherwise, stick to the mainstream vitamin- and mineral-enriched cereals.

Product Reviews: Mom's Best Naturals Breakfast Cereals
I usually steer clear of foods that are trying to imitate the tried and true cereals on the market because they often do a “fair-to-middlin,” as my grandma would say, job of being as good as the leading brands. But I must admit, Mom's Best has come up with a selection of breakfast cereals that are not only good for you, they are right up there with the rest of the cereal gang in taste...

Cereal, Think Outside The Bowl
Let's face it: Cereal is often guilty of almost every cardinal sins of nutrition. Sugar. Marshmallows. Food dyes. Artificial flavors. More sugar. But before it became an American breakfast staple with sky-high sugar counts, cereal had a clean record–as a nourishing food for health spas patients. In 1863, sanatorium operator and vegetarian James Caleb Jackson invented the first cereal in an attempt to combat the digestives woes of a population that routinely ate meat for breakfast. The cereal, which he named Granula, was composed of heavy bran nuggets that required overnight soaking to be chewable.

Made with whole grains – something most kids need more of – and nutrient-rich dried fruits and nuts, these better-than-storebought granola bars are ideal for a mid-morning nibble (especiall for kids who may skimp on breakfast) or as a special lunch box treat. Mom's Best Naturals Cereals
Suggested retail price: $2.29 - $3.29. (Available at Winn-Dixie and at natural food stores.)
Review: If 1967 was the Summer of Love, then 2007 must be the Summer of Cereal. I’ve eaten more cereal in the past three weeks than I have in the past three years, everything from granola to shredded wheat. Maybe it’s the time of year or maybe it’s the time of wheat, but there’s been a flood of new and updated breakfast products across my desk. The latest is a line of cereal products that are made without artificial flavors or colors, artificial preservatives or trans fats. They are also low in sugar and claim to be cheaper than their more famous counterparts. Sounds good, but they sent me four giant boxes to sample. Sweetened Wheat-fuls, Tasty O’s, Toasted Wheat-Fuls and Raisin Bran. I sighed and poured me a big heaping bowl of the Raisin Bran and topped it off with some whole milk. The raisins were plump and quite
sweet, so sweet that no additional sugar was required. The flakes stayed crisp throughout, too. The next day I went for the Sweetened Wheat-fuls, the “lightly sweetened whole grain wheat cereal.” I doused them
with the remainder of my milk and ate, with great relish. As for the all-natural claim, that’s good. As for the claims of being cheaper, I can’t say because mine were free. In short: If I ever get the urge to eat cereal again, which is doubtful since I’ve had so much in the past month, Mom’s Naturals is what I’d buy.
Very tasty and a good value. Now, if someone would send me some grits.

Thumbs-up cereals A healthy breakfast choice, Mom’s Best Naturals, is expanding its offerings with whole grain, all natural cereal. Mallo-oats, which resemble a certain sweetened cereal, have a much healthier profile, with less sugar, and no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. The cereals are sold in 16–24oz. boxes for $2.49-$3.49 at Shop-Rite, much less than most conventional or natural cereals.

All-natural on the cheap
I often hear this excuse for why people don’t choose healthier foods: They’re too expensive. Personally I think the benefit of eating all-natural products (and as many fresh fruits and vegetables as possible) can’t be measured in terms of money. But that aside, I’m here to do a little excuse-busting, because there’s a great new line of products that will take the sticker shock out of buying good-for-you cereal. The company is called Mom’s Best Naturals and they have flavors like lightly Sweetened Wheat-fuls and Honey Nut Toasty O’s that are the familiar flavors your family already loves--but made with no preservatives, no artificial flavors or colors or high fructose corn syrup. They are also high in fiber and are sold in family-sized boxes made of recycled paperboard. Plus the company uses wind energy for 100% of the electricity used to produce the cereals. But here's the excuse-busting part: They cost 20 to 50% less than similar natural or organic breakfast cereals. Find out where to buy at momsbestnaturals.com

Breakfast Dynamics
Organic breakfast cereal once consisted of easy-to-prepare corn flakes, bran or whole grains like oatmeal or rice. But the availability of organic ingredients and new imaginative choices in natural flavors have vastly improved selection, with gourmet market cereal aisles boasting a wide array of product as premium breakfast cereals see a sharp rise in popularity.
"The success of healthy cereals is, in fact, among the best indicators the market affords that all of the publicity about the importance of proper nutrition to health and healthy weight is influencing buying behavior" according to the UK grocery research organizations 2005 Packaged Facts Report.
Mom's Best Naturals markets its product towards not just the hardcore natural foodie, but kids and mainstream consumers also, by, most importantly, making its products affordable.

With cereal, Mom knows best
The first thing we noticed about the new Mom’s Best line of natural cereals was the extra-large size. The oat-circle-style Toasty O’s come in a 17.5-ounce “family size’’ box, and it’s the smallest in the line. But the prices, $2.50-$3.50 each, aren’t jumbo. Also impressive is the family-owned company’s commitment to recycling and using renewable energy. And did we mention that the cereals taste good? Toasty O’s, Honey Nut Toasty O’s, Sweetened Wheat-fuls and Raisin Bran are available locally at H-E-B.

Mom’s Best Intros Line of Affordable, Natural Cereals
Six New Varieties of Good-for-you Family Favorites
Anaheim, California, March 10, 2007 – Your Soy Daily reporter arrived on time for a scheduled interview with Kristen Lunsford and Jim Leavitt, both representing Mom’s Best™ naturals – there to introduce to Expo West attendees six new varieties of natural cereals, made to be both affordable for families and sustainable in the environment.
Lunsford, who knew her stuff, spoke first: “We have six new varieties of Mom’s Best Cereals – Sweetened Wheat-Fuls™, Toasty O’s®, Honey Nut Toasty O’s®, Raisin Bran, new Toasted Wheat-Fuls™ and new Mallow Oats™, all of which have just started hitting nationwide.
Then it was Leavitt’s turn: “These cereals are 20-50 percent less costly at retail than the other top natural brands, plus our boxes are 30 to 75% larger, all of which is a much better value for families.”
According to a recent survey by ACNeilsen, consumers said the main reason they don’t purchase natural or organic products is because they’re too expensive. This is a primary reason why Mom’s Best Naturals became a ‘natural’ for families.
“On top of being affordable”, Lunsford added, “Our products are sustainable, with boxes made of 100 % paperboard. And all the energy consumed at our plant (located in Northfield, Minnesota, near Minneapolis/St. Paul), is powered by windpower.”
Leavitt said Mom’s Best is a family-owned company, founded in 1919. The parent company has been in the cereal business for some time, but this is a new and separate venture, “and we’re excited about it.
Typically you’ll find organic and natural cereals running at $4.99 and higher, which is cost prohibitive to many consumers,”, he added. “We’ve given families a shot at getting good food for the most important meal of the day at an affordable price.”
Lunsford and Leavitt (sounds like a dance team) told us their distribution was growing, even though the brand is only about six months old. They’re in Albertson’s, Wild Oats and were gaining more interest at Expo West.
Your Soy Daily reporter’s day is ruined without a bowl of natural cereal to start things off; judging from the samples munched at the Mom’s Best booth that morning, it’s something I will certainly try.
How about you?

Big Cereals
If your family could use some ready-to-eat breakfast cereals for a little less dough, look for the really big boxes of Mom's Best Naturals, $2.29 to $3.29, in six varieties: Sweetened Wheat-fuls, Toasty-O's, Honey Nut Toasty O's, Raisin Bran, Toasted Wheat-fuls and Mallow-Oats. These cereals tasted pretty good to a two-taster test (grownups only), and they have a suggested retail price of 20 to 50 percent less per ounce compared to other natural and organic cereals.

Healthy Eating: Mom's Best Naturals
If you think it's tough to eat right yourself, you can be sure that trying to get an entire family to eat right is nearly impossible. Teens, especially, may be enough to drive a health-conscious parent to the brink with their junk food habits and a general aversion to anything nutritious. It gets even tougher when your kids are always rushing off to school without having a decent breakfast. Take that pop tart out of your teen's hand and give them something that's actually going to fuel a day of learning. Mom's Best Naturals is a line of natural cereals available at family-friendly prices. Wholesome options like Toasty O's, Wheat-fuls, and Raisin Bran are the perfect brain food for the long school day ahead. But if your kids have a sweet tooth to satisfy (and what kid doesn't) try Honey Nut Toasty O's, Mallow Oats, and Sweetened Wheat-fuls for a sweet, satisfying crunch. Every variety is made with whole grain, something that seems to be in short supply in our American diets. And Mom's Best Naturals stands out from other cereals because it can boast the absence of artificial preservatives, artificial flavors and colors, high fructose corn syrup, and saturated fats and hydrogenated oils. You get all of the flavor and none of the unwanted junk when you buy Mom's.

Tasty New Items

Moms know that breakfast is a very important start to the day. Mom’s Best Naturals, a family-owned cereal company, provides an affordable way to give kids a healthy, natural breakfast.

The company currently offers six types of dry, ready-to-eat cereal including Mallow Oats and Honey Nut Toasty O’s. These cereals have the appeal of classic favorites, but with a major difference: They’re all natural.

Mom’s Best Naturals contain no artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. The cereal also is free of high-fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oil and trans fat – all of which have been linked to weight gain. The products contain high amounts of whole grain and other nutrients.

The raisin bran, for example, contains 40 grams of whole grain, six grams of fiber and five grams of protein.

The cereal is packaged in “family-sized” boxes that are 30 to 75 percent larger than most other natural cereals. Mom’s Best Naturals have suggested retail prices that are substantially lower than natural cereals, costing parents $2.29-$3.29 per box. They can be found at supermarkets and natural food stores nationwide.
